Our last big trip before BabyWe just got back from our nation's capital, Washington DC, on Sunday night. We were there for four days, seeing all the famous landmarks and taking tons of pictures. We got in on Thursday morning after taking the red eye from SFO, took the DC Metro (which is so convenient, not to mention clean and cheap!) to our
hotel, checked in early, and got ready for our first day. We actually did a lot on the first day, walking to
Old Post Office Pavilion for lunch in the food court, going up to the top of the tower (2nd best view in DC, next to the Washington Monument), and then walking along The Mall to see the
Washington Monument, the
WWII Memorial, the Reflecting Pool, the
Lincoln Memorial, the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the
Korean War Veterans Memorial. The first day was pretty tiring already, doing all that walking and then walking back to the Metro, which was quite far from where we ended up. Since we got home late, we just decided to eat dinner in Chinatown since it was nearby our hotel.
Funny story - so we ordered wonton soup, chicken fried rice, and beef with green beans, and the waitress kinda snickered and said "That's all?" So she brought out the soup, and then brought out the beef dish with white rice. So we were waiting, waiting waiting for our fried rice, which never came! Hmm.... so she brought the check and we checked it and it didn't have the fried rice! Maybe THAT's why she was laughing at us. haha. I guess she didn't hear Alan order the fried rice.
Duck Tour and TapasWe slept in the next day and didn't get out until around noon! We took the Metro to
Union Station where we ate at the food court, then went on the
DC Duck Tour to take a tour of the city, while resting our feet :) We passed all the monuments and then went into the Potomac River as our land vehicle turned into a boat. Back to our hotel to get ready for dinner, at this tapas place one block from our hotel that I read lots of rave reviews about. It was called
Jaleo and before we left home I made a reservation but forgot that I made it for Thursday instead of Friday! But it worked out that we didn't need reservations since we went to eat late (~9:30pm) and there wasn't much of a line. We had mussels, patatas bravas, mushrooms, green beans with ham, and the oxtail dish. Not as good as Cha Cha Cha in the city, but it was good nonetheless!
A full day!Saturday we were determined NOT to waste half the day sleeping, so we left by 10am and took the Metro to
Arlington Cemetery where we took the tour and saw the eternal flame at JFK's gravesite, saw the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns Monument, and the
Arlington House, where Robert E. Lee used to live.
Then back into the city where we had lunch at the
US Holocaust Memorial Museum and then walked over to the
Jefferson Memorial (which is one of the sites that I hadn't been before!) Took lots of pics and then headed over to Union Station again to catch the
Tourmobile Twilight Tour which started at 7pm and ran til around 10:30pm. We got to see the sites at night, which was pretty cool because they were all illuminated. Alan got to take lots of night shots, which is the main reason why we wanted to go. One of the sites was the relatively new
Franklin D Roosevelt Memorial which was actually my favorite! There was lots of waterfalls and it was just very peaceful and calm and visitor-friendly.
Rain on the last dayGood thing it only rained on our last day there - the first three days were very sunny, and even though it was hot (90s), we got to tour the city! Sunday it rained, so we slept in, checked-out, and then went to church at
St. Patrick Church. We grabbed lunch at the
Ronald Reagan & International Trade Center Building food court (which was a really nice building, by the way). Then we walked over to take pics in front of the White House. It was raining steadily so we couldn't get too many great shots especially since we were trying to hold umbrellas while taking pics of ourselves. Oh well, at least we got to see it.
Back to our hotel to get our luggage and then off to the airport to catch our flight, which surprisingly because of the weather, was on time!
I'll post more pics later!
